WOW...what a day or should I say days, not sure relly how long we have been traveling but it is now 8:00pm Ukraine time and we just checked into our rooms in Ushgorood, interestlingly we were not supposed to be here until tomorrow but the two Rotary fellows who picked us up at the Lviv airport loaded us ito two cars and 4 hours later we are in Ushgorood, that makes just over 30 hours since we left Edmonton, I think.
ReplyDeleteBetween head bobs and cat naps we saw some amazingly green and lush countryside on the drive, now its off to dinner with a Rotary member who works at the hotel,,,got to run.
Cheers,more later.

Well so much for sleeping in, woke at 6:00 am and couldnt get back to sleep although I felt tired. Breakfast at 9:00 which ws a cold doughy crepe thingy wrapped around cottage cheese with sugar on top, tasty in a weird sort of way, I didnt eat all the dough and I think the waiter was offended, o well!
ReplyDeleteAfter breakfast we did a dry run of our presentaion which we deliver tonight. Speaking of running I went for a run after breakfast to try to shake out the cobwebs and loosen the joints. The area we are staying in is interesting to say the least, multiple large homes with big metal gates on electric openers, 5 to 10 in a row then right nextdoor a series of run down homes or vacant lots, dogs everywhere and even rosters? Flowers are in full bloom,
Uzhorod is the main town in the Transcarpathian region and has a largeg Hungarian and Romainian poulation, the people seem very reserved but polite, I offered a freindly 'preveet' to everyone I met along my run but none reply, lol
Off for a team lunch now and later a foot tour of old town.

Dobra ranuk,
ReplyDeleteToday is seradah and memorial day in Ukraine, we watched the parade and visited the war memorial park this morning.
Last night we were treated to a incredible dinner, each course was introduced with a toast of vodka.
Now we are off to a sanatoriam in the country,(?)
dobra dopobatchina for now.

Busy day today, Rotarians; Tanya Myaskovska and Oleh Luksha took us to the Palanok Castle, (a 30 minute drive from Ozgorod near Mukachevo) which was built in the 14th century and inhabited up to the the early 1900's. We had lunch at the Karpaty Sanatorium which turned out to be a health spa not a mental institution, lol After lunch we toured the facility and sampled the mineral waters from the area. This evening after supper which consisted of svinina and spuds etc Oleh treated us to a couple of pints at an outdoor restaurant/bar, we were Joined by Gylina (and her family) who was in Alberta with the incoming Ukraine GSE last fall, she offered greetings to Paul and Ihor.
ReplyDeleteOff to bed now, up early tomorrow; professional study day, we will visit the region hospital emergency centre, downtown fire station and the central city hospital.
Dobra night,,,,,,

Another active day and it's
ReplyDeletenot over yet, we get a two hour break before dinner.
Today we visited two hospitals, the first was a general, which was in sad shape, the equipment was ancient it was actually depressing to see the state off affairs. The doctor who gave us the tour was a cancer specialist and has work in the top hospital in Russia and has also worked in the US, very skilled but unfortunatly working in less the ideal conditions. The second hospital was neurology surgery centre which was in much better shape, the director toured us through the emergency trauma wing and we actually got gowned up and watched a patient being preped for brain surgery.
We also spent some time at the EMS facility and learned that despite the fact that they dont have access to new technology the still manage an average 10 minute response time, each unit is staffed with a driver a nurse and a doctor, but not much else, no o2 no defib basicaly just a cot and a first aid kit.
The hi-light of the day was that one of the local TV stations followed us around all morning and we will be featured on the evening news and you tube.
Forgot to mention the lunch today,,, we had an amazing Borsch, best yet.
By for now,,,
o ya Jay and I bought some beers today turns out they are non- alcholic, lol
Ok, sorry I am now two days behind due to the fact that we left the hotel and are now in host family homes and I didnt have internet access. So this will be along post:
ReplyDeleteForgot to mention that we went to a football match (soccer) after our sanatoriam visit, It was Ozhgordo vrs a team from the south a quarter final match and Ozhgorod won 1 - 0. It was quite a match, the fans are very loyal to their respective teams and very ati- referee. The game was good but it was more fun watching the crazy fans.
We never did get to see our footage on the local news last night as we were in transition form hotel life to host family. I am staying with a Ozhgorod Skala member and his family, wife and 4 kids, a newborn boy a 2 year old girl named Emily and a 8 year girl Annie and a 10 year old girl, Beatrix. Very nice people, young and succesful by Ukraine standards, Victor is a lawyer but also owns and operates (wih his wife) a Husquvarna dealership, chainsaws lawnmowers etc. They live in the most incredible house which was actually a condemed wharehouse three years ago and has been totaly restored to include the dealership and law office on the bottom floor and the living quarters top floor. The moved in two months ago so it basicaly brand new, I have my own room with a private bath with a steam shower,,,,very nice.
Yesterday before meeting the host families we met with a young leadership group (some rotorac) 13 to 16 year olds with a very keen desire to learn international relations, language, leadership etc.
They were very interested in Canada and asked a ton of questions, we feed them all Quebec maple syrup and gave them a Canad picture book, before they would let us leave they all wanter our e-mail adresses or Facebook contact, lol
Today we actualy got to sleep in to 9:30 a real treat, then we drove out to the country to a sort of Ukraine guest ranch / bbq place. Rotary Skal was there in full force and they prepared a feast over a camp fire and wood bbq barrel that was unreal, a kind of fish soup almost a chowder and a giant stir fry that consided of pork, carrots, onions, rice, plumes and a few secret spices that I didnt see, served with an assortment of fresh veggies and fruit and about 5 toast of vodka and beer.
to top the day off I attended Ukrain Catholic mass with my host family, it lasted just over 2 hours, but was extremely interesting, essentialy the same as our service but with a lot more singing and of cours it was all in Ukrainian so I couldnt understand most of it.
Tonight for supper was home made pyrogies and home made vodka.
Good night,,, more tomorrow.
